Teaching Evidence Based Exercise to Older People

This qualification is divided into two parts.    Students may opt to study part 1 only in order to meet their educational and professional needs.   However, students are encouraged to progress to part 2 and so gain the knowledge and skills required to give advice and guidance to older people with a wide range of health and fitness needs.    

Part 1

This focuses on the needs of the frail, less active and mobile older person and the prevention of falls and injuries. 

Students who study part 1 only will gain the Certificate in Teaching Evidence Based Exercise to Older People and will be qualified to teach a range of safe, suitable and evidence based exercises in a chair based exercise session:

u     that will help improve / maintain muscular strength and endurance, mobility, independence, balance and co-ordination and prevent falls and injuries

u     to frail older people

u     to people who have suffered a stroke  

Part 2

This focuses on the needs of the more active and able older person with particular reference to cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes.

Students who progress to part two will gain the full Diploma in Teaching Evidence Based Exercise to Older People and will also be qualified to prescribe and teach a range of safe, suitable and evidence based exercises:

u     suitable for Phase lV Cardiac Rehabilitation

u     designed specifically to meet the needs of people suffering with high risk diseases and conditions associated with ageing, for example, coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity

u     that will help reduce intermittent claudication

u     that will help reduce risk factors associated with ill health by improving general health, strength mobility and independence

u     suitable for active older people suffering with low risk conditions and diseases associated with ageing
